Bootle was bombed more than any other part of the UK during World War Two, as the German Bombers aimed for the docks to stop the supplies, troops and materiel coming from the United States. At Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool the Battle of the Atlantic was organised. 30000 drowned, and there is a memorial at the Pier Head. 30000 U-Boat crew were also killed. If you wander down Ash Street near Bootle Strand there is a small garden area on the right. You might walk past it and barely notice. But if you know it is there you will go in and see the above monument. Dozens were killed near here in a direct hit on a bomb shelter. Across Liverpool over 2700 were killed, most of them in the May blitz of 1941. How quickly things are forgotten.
